X. A Letter from Mr. Peter Wargentin, F. R. S. Secretary to the Royal Academy of Sciences at Stockholm, to the Rev. Nevil Maskelyne, B. D. F. R. "PARISII, ab anno 1765 habitas, inter se conferre, ut
"inde eliciatur vera differentia utriusque meridiani:" huic desiderio tuo lubens satisfacio.
Tuis observationibus primi satellitis non nisi 17 correspondentes MESSIERII obtigerunt; quarum 8 fuerunt immersiones
immersiones, et 9 emersiones. Ipsas observationes, inter se et cum multis aliis, atque cum postrema editione measurementum tabularum (eà scilicet, quam alteri editioni astronomiae suae inseruit Cl. DELALANDIUS) comparatas, videoas in subjunctâ appendice, in quâ Paris Cl. indicat observationes MESSIERII, in palatio Clugny; Paris O. autem, in ipso observatorio regio habitas. Hic sufficiat attulisse resultantes a quovis immersionum et emersionum correspondentium pari, meridianorum differentias.

Tu, vir celeberrime, fere semper usus es telescopio NEWTONIANO 6 pedum: CL. MESSIER plerumque GREGORIANO 2½ pedum, vel acromatico 3½ pedum, vel aliis æquales
æqualis fere potentiæ, quorum neutrum non plusquam centies objectorum diametros amplificat. Æquales fere inventæ per immersiones et emersiones correspondentes meridianorum differentiæ, satis indicare videntur, ferme æqualis quoque præstantiæ fuisse utriusque observatoris instrumenta. Alium et certiorem modum ea comparandi nescio, præcipuè cum tu (a) nullibi indicaveris potentiam tui NEWTONIANI: nam longitudo sola ambiguum est argumentum.
Per medium itaque deductum ex 7 paribus immersionum et 8 emersionum, invenitur differentia inter meridianum GRENOVICENSEM et observatorium CL. MESSIER, 9' 38"; vel seclusis uno immersionum uno emersionum pari, utpote quæ nimium a reliquis recedentem, indicant meridianorum differentiam, 9' 37"; adeoque foret inter observatorium GRENOVICENSE et regium Parisinum 9' 35", hoc est 19 secundis major quam hucusque putavimus. Obstupui videns tantam incertitudinem circa veram meridianorum differentiam inter duo præcipua orbis observatoria, eaque vicina, in quibus ingens observationum numerus, annis

plusquam 100, habitus est. Quid tum de aliis sentien-
dum? Ab una parte vix persuadere mihi possim, tantum
errorem tamdiu potuisse latere; vel comparatas observa-
tiones eclipsium Solis, Lunae, occultationum fixarum, &c.
tam multum potuisse fallere: ab altera, egregius 15 bo-
narum observationum consensus, haud facile fortuitus,
fidem quandam mereri videbatur; nisi observationes fa-
tellitum, ad determinandas accurate longitudinum dif-
ferentias, prorsus inepatis judicaveris.
Ad tollendum hoc dubium, consului observationes
primi satellitis, eodem tempore, in ipsis observatoriiis re-
giis, quarum non nisi duae sunt immersiones, sed novem

(b) There was a mistake of twelve hours in setting down this observation at Greenwich, by the clock keeping sidereal time, which made an error of $1'\ 49''$ in the reduction to apparent time. The correct time of immersion is $16^h\ 59'\ 31''$, which happens to agree exactly with Mr. Wargentin's calculation, and the difference of longitude of Stockholm and Greenwich by this observation is $1^h\ 12'\ 14''$ instead of $1^h\ 10'\ 25$ set down above; and the mean difference from all the seven corresponding immersions is $1^h\ 12'\ 30''$. Quod attinet differentiam meridianorum observatorii Parisiensis et Stockholmensis, ex 8 immersionibus et 13 emersionibus primi satellitis simul in utroque notatis ante annum 1760, conclusi eam, per medium, esse 1h 2' 51". Sed 7 immersiones et 12 emersiones correspondentes, factae post annum 1760, eam paulo minorem, scilicet 2' 47", reddunt. Nihilominus, cum per observationes quarundam eclipsium solarium evincere conati sunt celeberrimi viri, PINGRÉ, DU SEJOURS, et LEXELL, eam paucis secundis esse majorem, non refragabor assumere eam 1h 2' 55", qua subtracta ab inventa differentia observatoriorum Grenovicensis et Stockholmensis 1h 12' 21", restat differentia Grenovicensis et Parisiensis 9' 26".
Omnes itaque haec disquisitiones testantur, differentiam quaestam majorem esse 9' 16" quantam hucusque existimavimus; et ni fallor ad 9' 25" proxime accedere; de qua re tamen totum ad te, vir celeberrime, defero judicium.
Interim hinc appareat, arduum fane esse, praecisas meridianorum differentias, ope observationum satellitum Jovis, determinare. Fixarum occultationes a Lunâ, probè observatae et excussae, certorem sine dubio suppeditant methodum.

Valde miror, quare illi, qui bonum telescopium vel tubum habent, eo non semper in observandis satellitibus utantur, sed jam hoc, jam alio, forte minus praestanti. Observationes multum dubias, vel aeris vitio vel aliem ob caussam, ne quidem in diarium refero, nam nulla observatione praestat malae. Quantum malae observationes, pro bonis venditatae, me confuderint et torserint, dicere non possum.
Quartus, die 8 Februarii hujus anni, eclipsin tantum partialem passus est. Magnum tuae in me amicitiae signum id interpretabor, si, quovis anno finito, tuas mecum communicare velis observationes satellitum; nam his, etiam senex, delector. Hanc quoque provinciam, examinandi motus satellitum, mihi, quasi tacito consensu, detulisse videntur collegae astronomi. Ceterum ingruens aetas, nimiæ occupationes quas secretarii munus injungit, defectus instrumentorum (nam murali nondum instructus sum, quidquid dicat Celeb. LALANDIUS) ut taceam modicas ingenii vires, vetant quo minus aliquid tuae vel aliorum exspectatione dignum praestare possim (c).
