The Extract of a Letter from Lisle in Flanders, May 25. N.S. 1686. giving an Account of an unusual Storm of Hail which fell there. There fell in this City Hail of so great a bigness, that the least exceeded Pigeons Eggs. Several of them were weighed, and were some a quarter of a Pound, others of a Pound Weight and more. One among the rest was observed to contain a dark brown matter in the middle thereof; and being thrown into the Fire, it gave a very great Report. Others were transparent, which melted before the Fire immediately. This Storm passed over the Cittadel and Town, and left not a whole Glass in the Windows on the windward side. Circa Circa observationes ab initio Eclipsis usque ad medium circiter, eas quidem praeter unam, aut alteram, omnis erroris expertes esse non ausim affirmare; intercurrentibus enim identidem nubibus Solis species nonnihilo minor & pallidior reddebatur, unde non omnimoda certitudo promitti potest. A medio autem Eclipsis ad finem usque cum nullis nubibus Sol impediretur, observationes certiores sunt & diligentius habitae. Notabile fuit; cum quantitas Eclipsis fuerit dig.7.20. quod non modicam aeris offuscationem debet inducere, ut aliàs multoties in consimilibus defectibus observatum est; nihilominus tamen vix sensibiliter consuetum in sole libero aeris statum mutatum fuisse; unde plurimis solem non respicientibus orta suspicio, aut solem non defecisse, aut minimum quidem; cujus quidem rei non alia mihi videtur assignanda causa, quam ingens vis nubium à Sole maxime illuminatarum, quae non multum ab eo distabant; ab his enim solis radius per reflexionem, & refractionem multiplicatus certè intensior redditus deficientem aliunde splendorem potuit compensare: sic aliquando videmus praesertim occidente Sole nubes adeo illuminatas esse, ut post ejus etiam occasum, vividissimam lucem effundant, quinimo etiam umbras non semel projiciant.
